Nyree, our daughter, was a fun loving and happy person who loved dressing up, especially for the children where she worked at Kaurna Plains Children's Centre.
She would often dress up as one of the characters in the book she was reading to the children, and at other special times like Book Week, Christmas and Easter.
Nyree was diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer in September 2020, and she passed away in February 2021 at 34 years of age #never2young. You can read more about Nyree's story here.
The Kaurna Plains Children's Centre decided to have a fundraiser and it was themed to honour Nyree's fun loving nature with fancy dress, and an afternoon tea.
The staff and community family and friends worked very hard to make the afternoon a success. Money was raised for Bowel Cancer Australia through the selling of raffle tickets. Some of the raffle prizes were lovingly made by Nyree's friends and others donated by local businesses, who understood the #never2young message.
The raffle raised over $1,000.
The afternoon was also to make new friends. There were leaflets available from Bowel Cancer Australia that helped encourage discussions about cancer awareness and the #never2young message.
The #never2young message is, be aware of your body, and if anything does not feel right, get yourself checked until you feel comfortable that doctors have ruled out the possibility of cancer.
The very special event of the day was the unveiling of a memorial bench located in the "Yarning Circle" section of the kindy garden, to honour Nyree's contribution to the Centre and the children and families she loved.
We would like to thank the staff at Bowel Cancer Australia for making patients and carers lives just a little easier.
