PROMs questionnaire

| Understanding your patient’s results

PROs are patient-centred and relate not just to survival; the questions address areas affecting your patient's ability to lead a productive life, during and beyond bowel cancer treatment and care.

Their responses are converted into PRO scores which reflect the results they care most about when seeking treatment (e.g. functional improvement and the ability to live a normal, productive life) and create an information-base against which the two of you can monitor and assess their progress, before, during and after their bowel cancer treatment.
Baseline Clinician patient questionnaire

Their scorecard appears on the cover of their Outcomes Summary Report.
The summary table includes the issues that were identified as the most important to bowel cancer patients during the development of the ICHOM Colorectal Cancer Standard Set.

Their scores are based on the answers they provided in their questionnaire and are calculated using scientifically validated scoring methods.

The questions are divided into three categories: function-related, symptom-related, and overall health/quality of life.
Function-related questions cover things like how the patient is feeling physically and emotionally, and whether their physical or medical treatment is interfering with their family life or social activities or causing them financial difficulties.
  • A high score on the functional scale indicates they are functioning well. This is what they want to aim for.
  • A low score on the functional scale suggests their cancer or treatment is affecting their ability to function in a way that needs to be considered.

Symptom-related questions cover issues that can often be overlooked, such as fatigue, pain, nausea/vomiting, appetite loss, sleep disturbance, sore skin around the stoma, constipation, diarrhoea, or sexual dysfunction.

  • A high score on a symptom scale/item indicates they may be experiencing symptoms or issues that are negatively affecting them and need attention.
  • A low score on a symptom scale/item indicates they are tracking well and that the issue in question is currently not of concern for them.

The two questions relating to how they would rate their overall health and quality of life provide a good indicator of how they are feeling generally.

  • A high score for the global health status/QoL represents a high QoL (quality of life).
  • A low score for the global health status/QoL suggests cancer and treatment are affecting their quality of life in significant ways that require investigation and follow up.

The scores can be compared against published data, e.g. by using the data for comparable groups of patients published in the EORTC QLQ-C30 Reference Values manual (Fayers et. al., 1998). In the Reference Values manual, data are shown for the main cancer sites, divided by stage of disease.

General population data based on large random samples from the general population in Norway and Sweden, and females in Denmark are also published (Hjermstad et al., 1998; Klee et al., 1997; Michelson et al., 2000).
Patient Questionnaire Clinician View from Dashboard

Discuss your patient’s scores with them, as they can help highlight what matters most to them during their treatment and care and can be used to track their progress over time.

By prioritising the concerns your patients consider to be most important, PROs can help you deliver treatment and care that is more personalised, responsive, and effective - giving real meaning to the term 'patient-centred care'.
Q. What happens next?

As your patient progresses through treatment and beyond, they will be asked to complete additional patient reported outcome questionnaires (at least annually – frequency is determined by their diagnosis and treatment plan), allowing you both to track their progress over time.

A reminder email will be sent 7 days in advance to the email address your patient provided, alerting them when a new questionnaire is available for completion.

You will also receive an email reminder alerting you when a clinical questionnaire is available for you to complete on your patient’s behalf.

Frequency is determined by your patient’s diagnosis and treatment plan and will be in sync with their patient-reported outcome questionnaires.

Completing questionnaires over time, will enable you and your patients to
  • track their progress,
  • gain a long-term view of the impact bowel cancer and treatment has had on them, and
  • identify areas where additional support might help them to live your best life.
