Bowel Cancer Australia Medical Director and recently retired colorectal surgeon, A/Prof Graham Newstead AM was recently made an Honorary Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (ACS).
The award was accompanied by the citation: “The American College of Surgeons pays tribute to your outstanding achievements in surgery, your international reputation, and your distinguished humanitarian services”.
According to the ACS, individuals selected for Honorary Fellowship generally practice outside of the United States, possess an international reputation in the field of surgery or medicine, and have provided distinguished humanitarian service in the field of medical science.
The ACS has more than 160 living Honorary Fellows. In 2022 Honorary Fellowship was bestowed upon 12 prominent surgeons, including Dr Newstead, who is commonly credited with involvement in launching colon and rectal surgery as a specialty in Australia.
Bowel Cancer Australia CEO, Julien Wiggins congratulated Dr Newstead, acknowledging, “his exceptional clinical knowledge, selfless dedication and passion for reducing bowel cancer incidence and mortality through awareness and screening throughout his 40+ year career.”
He is a leading advocate for lowering the screening start age given the rising rates of bowel cancer in younger people,” Mr Wiggins added.
In addition to Dr Newstead’s most recent achievement, he has previously received awards for colorectal surgical activities performed both in Australia and overseas, relating to Outreach services and Scholarship training programs but most importantly for being at the forefront of the developing bowel cancer screening programs.
In 2005 Dr Newstead was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for service to medicine in the field of colorectal surgery, particularly through the development of the Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia and New Zealand, the implementation of international specialist surgical training programs, and the promotion of health awareness initiatives.
Recently retired from clinical surgical practice, Dr Newstead continues to dedicate his time as Medical Director, Bowel Cancer Australia and as Chairman of the International Council of Coloproctology.
